At first glance, the opening of Matthew’s Gospel hardly seems like a Christmas text. A long list of names — fathers and sons, kings and exiles — doesn’t stir the heart the way the story of the angels and shepherds does. But it would be a mistake to dismiss or trivialize this text. For the early Church, this passage was essential. It is a core revelation of who Christ is.
