Are you weary? The holiday season is filled with stress. If you&rsquo;re worn out, you&rsquo;re in good company. One recent study found as many as 9 out of 10 Americans report feeling stressed during the month of December.
We&rsquo;re not that far off from Isaiah in this respect. Isaiah&rsquo;s people had waited too long, suffered too much. They began to wonder if they had been forgotten by God (Is 40:27).

BECOME: A Study for Eucharistic Missionaries

For years, I have joined a group of friends for an Advent celebration of lessons and carols. One family hosts the group in their home. We eat soup according to what has become our tradition (my friend Emily prepares these amazing charcuterie boards) and we all catch up on the past year.&nbsp;
But the best part of the evening comes when we pile into the living room. We read from Scripture (some of the children are old enough now to lead readings) and belt out carols. One of my favorite hymns we sing echoes the words of today&rsquo;s reading from Isaiah, &ldquo;Comfort, comfort ye my people, / Speak ye peace, thus saith our God. / Comfort those who sit in darkness, / Mourning neath their sorrows&rsquo; load.&rdquo;

We all love a good story&mdash;from the characters and the twists and turns&nbsp;of a captivating plot to the dynamics of a conflict and the resolution&nbsp;at the end. Perhaps we love stories because they give us insight into&nbsp;ourselves, animating a deeper sense of meaning in our lives. The Bible&nbsp;is the story of God&rsquo;s love for us. It begins with him creating us out of&nbsp;love, redeeming us by that love, and finally transforming us in his love.
This divine author is love&mdash;an exchange of love within the life of the&nbsp;Blessed Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. What a story!

Isaiah today imagines a world transformed, a place where wolves and lambs live together, where children play in safety, and where peace fills the earth &ldquo;as water covers the sea&rdquo; (Is 11:1-10). It&rsquo;s a vision so extraordinary that it can only be explained as the fruit of a new creation, a world made whole again by the Spirit of God.

When Caleb met Natalie, he was at a low point in his life. Her relationship with Jesus inspired him to do his own research on the faith. After discovering that the Eucharist really is Jesus, Caleb decided to become Catholic, paving the way for Natalie to do the same. For students of history, you will recall that the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary was solemnly proclaimed by Bl. Pope Pius IX on December 8, 1854. It would be a mistake, however, to approach today&rsquo;s feast as if it were a theological technicality or mere curiosity. What we are actually celebrating today is our salvation. And in this gift from God, he offers not a patch on a broken life, but a new creation.

Monday, December 8th

Isaiah&rsquo;s prophecy today overflows with hope: &ldquo;In a very little while, the deaf shall hear the words of a book, and out of gloom and darkness, the eyes of the blind shall see.&rdquo;
This is the language of restoration. Isaiah looks to the day when the Lord will speak again, and His word will heal creation. The deserts will blossom, the blind will see, the poor will rejoice, and the whole world will be made new.

Friday, December 5th

Advent always begins in the dark.
The Church doesn&rsquo;t turn on all the lights at once. When we bless the Advent wreath today, we light a single candle. One small flame, trembling against the shadows. It&rsquo;s a small sign that dawn is coming. That&rsquo;s what this season is about: learning to recognize the first light of God&rsquo;s new day.

Sunday, November 30th

&ldquo;A strong city have we,&rdquo; the prophet Isaiah declares at today&rsquo;s Mass, &ldquo;he sets up walls and ramparts to protect us&rdquo; (Is 26:1). But the prophet isn&rsquo;t speaking about stone walls or human power. He&rsquo;s speaking about something much deeper, much more powerful.

Renewal Sessions: Revive Your Spiritual Life and Apostolates

The readings for Holy Mass today give us one image that unites them all: the table. Isaiah calls it &ldquo;a feast of rich food and choice wines.&rdquo; The psalm sings, &ldquo;You spread the table before me.&rdquo; And in the Gospel, Jesus Himself provides bread for the multitude on the mountain. Everywhere we look today, God is feeding his people.

Historically, veiling in the Catholic Church has been a sign of reverence and an acknowledgement of the sacred. Our discussion will examine the history and theology behind why women always wore veils prior to Vatican II, and why there seems to be a renewed interest in the practice with younger Catholic women. What Jesus did for us through his Death and Resurrection was the greatest&nbsp;act of love in history. Through this act he saved us. And then, desiring that we&nbsp;encounter him and allowing his Paschal Mystery to reach each of us, he gave&nbsp;us himself in the Eucharist. He did this for each one of us. Individually. But it&nbsp;is easy to feel unworthy of this gift of love. We may feel we have too much&nbsp;baggage. We may feel unlovable. But God didn&rsquo;t come to reveal himself to us on&nbsp;a pedestal; he came to enter into our messy condition, no matter how messy!&nbsp;He came to fix us from within&mdash;to transform us from the inside out. Some&nbsp;might be surprised by how generous and abundant the love of God really is. We&nbsp;don&rsquo;t deserve God&rsquo;s love, but that&rsquo;s the incredible reality of God&rsquo;s mercy. This&nbsp;relationship with God isn&rsquo;t all about our love for him. It&rsquo;s about his love for us&nbsp;that changes our lives forever.
