Just before Christmas, the Church gives us the story of Hannah and her son, Samuel. At first, it may seem far removed from the manger at Bethlehem, yet it prepares our hearts perfectly for the mystery we are about to celebrate. Hannah’s story is one of longing fulfilled and gratitude offered. She had prayed for years to conceive, and when the Lord granted her request, she did not cling to the gift. Instead, she returned it to the Giver. In an act of profound faith, she offers her son back to God, saying in effect: "This child belongs to you."
